Hybridisations within a Graph Based Hyper-heuristic Framework for University Timetabling Problems

چکیده
A significant body of literature has explored various research directions in hyper-heuristics (which can be thought as heuristics to choose heuristics). In this paper we define a graph based hyper-heuristic (GHH) framework and compare the performance of a number of local search based searching algorithms as the high level heuristics. They are used to search upon permutations of low level graph heuristics rather than solutions within the GHH framework. We also investigate efficient hybridisations between the GHH and local search methods. Aiming at gaining an in-depth understanding on this new technique, we address and discuss the fundamental issues concerning the neighborhood structures, the characteristics of the two search spaces (namely the search spaces of the graph heuristics and the actual solutions). Issues of exploring by the high level search and exploiting by the local search within the hybrid GHH are also addressed. These, to our knowledge, are entirely novel directions in hyper-heuristics. The comparisons among different high level heuristics within the unified framework suggest that the role high level search play is to explore as wide search space as possible within a limited time using simple and iterative methods. The efficient hybridisations within the GHH obtained competitive results compared with the best published results for both benchmark course and exam timetabling problems, demonstrating its efficiency and generality. Possible extensions upon this simple yet general graph based hyper-heuristic are also provided.

Hybridizations within a graph-based hyper-heuristic framework for university timetabling problems
A significant body of recent literature has explored various research directions in hyperheuristics (which can be thought as heuristics to choose heuristics). In this paper, we extend our previous work to construct a unified graph based hyper-heuristic (GHH) framework, under which a number of local search based algorithms as the high level heuristics are studied to search upon sequences of low ...
متن کاملA graph-based hyper-heuristic for educational timetabling problems
This paper presents an investigation of a simple generic hyper-heuristic approach upon a set of widely used constructive heuristics (graph coloring heuristics) in timetabling. Within the hyperheuristic framework, a Tabu Search approach is employed to search for permutations of graph heuristics which are used for constructing timetables in exam and course timetabling problems. This underpins a m...
متن کاملAdaptive automated construction of hybrid heuristics for exam timetabling and graph colouring problems
In this paper we present a random iterative graph based hyper-heuristic to produce a collection of heuristic sequences to construct solutions of different quality. These heuristic sequences can be seen as dynamic hybridisations of different graph colouring heuristics that construct solutions step by step. Based on these sequences, we statistically analyse the way in which graph colouring heuris...
متن کاملAnalysing the High Level Heuristics within a Graph Based Hyper-heuristic
This paper presents our work on analysing high level heuristics within a graph based hyper-heuristic framework. Local search based methods (Tabu Search and steepest descent method) are compared as the high level heuristics within the graph based hyper-heuristic framework and the analysis of their neighborhood structures and performance on the high level landscape is carried out. An iterated ste...
متن کاملHyper heuristic based on great deluge and its variants for exam timetabling problem
Today, University Timetabling problems are occurred annually and they are often hard and time consuming to solve. This paper describes Hyper Heuristics (HH) method based on Great Deluge (GD) and its variants for solving large, highly constrained timetabling problems from different domains. Generally, in hyper heuristic framework, there are two main stages: heuristic selection and move acceptanc...
